Some unsafe habits are still practiced even with the advance of research and scientific studies regarding the effects of the sun on skin and our health.
The bronze and “golden” hue tanning brings to the skin is associated with youth, travel and even good health. It is however a lifestyle habit that can lead to skin problems in the future. 14
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color.People with light skin have less melanin than people with dark skin. When skin is damaged by UV rays, the body makes more melanin to try to protect against further damage. While this results in the “sun-kissed” tan look, it is actually your skin’s defensive response to the damage it is experiencing while tanning. 14
But a suntan does not provide good protection against the harmful effects of UV rays. In fact, a suntan is a sign that skin has already been damaged, and tanned skin can continue to be damaged when exposed to UV rays. 14
People often consider sunbeds as a safe way to tan. This is a big misconception as there is no such thing as a safe tan! 3
UV output from tanning beds can be up to ten times more powerful than sunlight, increasing the incidence of skin cancers. With respect to melanoma, the deadliest of skin malignancies, lifetime risk increases by 75% if people engage in artificial tanning before the age of 35 years. 1
